family feet 4Your children have flat feet.  In fact you, your spouse and your extended family may have flat feet.

Just because everybody has flat feet, doesn’t mean you have to accept flat feet for life, or the standard treatment.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Harry G. Baldinger, DPM from New York. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What is flat foot?

There are two types of flat feet, rigid and flexible.  A flexible flat foot is one that is flat to the ground when standing, but the arch returns when you sit.  A rigid flat foot cannot form an arch.  Flat foot can be mild or severe. This article is about flexible flat foot.

What are Symptoms of Flat Feet?

Your child may complain that he/she cannot walk far, participate in school activities, or stand for a long time. You can never find shoes that fit properly, or shoes wear out too quickly.

Your child is not lazy or a complainer.  The pain is real and pediatric flat foot is a disaster waiting to happen.

You may be beginning to develop bunions, hammertoes, heel pain or even knee, back or hip pain. Tears of the posterior tibial tendon are one of the most common symptoms. As the posterior tendon is constantly stretched and stressed it eventually get damaged and tears.  Much foot pain is caused by your untreated flat feet deteriorating.

You have been to the doctor and you know there is not much to do except wear orthotics.

Not true.

What are the limits of orthotics for Children?

Orthotics, when made correctly, hold the foot in the correct neutral position.  The foot arches when standing.  This may relieve discomfort, but it will never correct the shape of the foot or prevent the problem from getting worse as the child grows.

What new treatments are available?

Dr. Baldinger offers advanced treatment to correct pediatric flat foot. You are not only correcting the foot, but the entire alignment of the body.

The procedure is done in an outpatient setting using local anesthesia.  A tiny stent is implanted through a tiny incision.  No bones, joints or growth plates are disturbed.  Your child can walk immediately after the procedure and typically resumes normal activities in six weeks. The procedure is safe for children as young as five.

What should I do for my baby?
